11th Annual Trip to Washington, D.C. Planned by SLCF International
A trip to Washington, D.C. is a great experience for any American; it is an experience about which many people from other countries can only dream. As part of the KSBC outreach to international students (in partnership with Fellowship Baptist Church in Northern Virginia – one of the supporting churches of Paul and Geri Briggs), a group of around 20 international students and scholars will go to the Washington, D.C. area to visit our Nation’s Capital from March 8th– March 13th. This journey is a “missions trip” in that it is taken for the explicit purpose of Gospel proclamation to those going on the trip! The majority of those who will be with Paul, Mark Ridge and Mike Svetanoff on this trip are people who do not yet believe in Jesus Christ. Our prayer is that through the relationships that are begun and built through this trip the Lord would work in the hearts of each one to bring them to Himself. Please pray with us to this end.
The trip is designed to give students from other countries the opportunity to visit the sights and monuments of Washington, D.C., to stay in the home of an American family and to be together to study the Word of God each evening after seeing the sights in Washington. We would appreciate your prayers for our safety as we travel. We would also ask you to pray that many lasting and deep friendships would be built as a result of traveling many miles together.
Ron Lindholm, Senior Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church recently made these comments about their involvement in the international student work here at Purdue. “Since 1998, our church has been privileged every year to host a group of their students for a weeklong Spring Break Trip to Washington, D.C. In this way, our church family has been able to minister alongside of the Briggs to the very people they are seeking to reach at Purdue for the Savior. Through this unique partnership, our church has gained invaluable experience in how to carry out ministry to internationals–and the Lord has used that to place in our hearts a burden for internationals living here in Northern Virginia. Today, our church is in the fifth year of its own international outreach ministry. Every week, the Lord has been giving us the opportunity to share the gospel with thirty to fifty students who come to us seeking to learn English.” Kossuth Street Baptist Church has an immense privilege to be strategically located to thousands of international students. Praise God for the work He is doing in opening doors of opportunity to proclaim the wonder of His name to those who are coming to Purdue. Please pray that the Lord will send more laborers into His field that is ready to be harvested!

Meet the New Custodian

Meet Andrew Depue, our newly appointed custodian who will begin his duties the first week of March. The son of Pastor Tim and Valerie Depue, Andrew moved to Lafayette in November to be with his family. He graduated from High School in New York in 2005, then attended community college and Word of Life Bible Institute. He plans to attend Purdue in the fall, and ultimately, to attend seminary. Andrew has worked at a feed
store and a movie theater, as well as headed up a work crew responsible for basic rounds, cleaning, and upkeep at Word of Life. When asked why he is interested in serving as custodian, Andrew said, “ I want to be involved in the church as much as I can. Taking the job as a custodian allows me to see how a church operates more in the background. Even though I have seen this to some degree by being a pastors’ kid, I want to see it first hand, up close, not from a distance. This job allows me to do that.” Andrew’s  responsibilities include cleaning the building, managing cleaning supplies and equipment, overseeing building use, and coordinating volunteers for specific work projects. His  responsibilities do not include picking up after everybody. “While the custodian is responsible to see that everything is maintained and in good working order, everyone can help by being sure that they use the building properly and leave it in as good or better shape than they found it. Picking up, putting away, and encouraging the same all helps maintain the facilities,” says Pastor Depue. Welcome Andrew!

KSBC Classifieds: Ministry Opportunities

  • Children’s Name Tag Ministry: This is a new opportunity for anyone interested in serving the Children’s and Nursery Ministries without dealing with diapers or lesson planning. Quarterly, the church office connects with children’s leaders to get a list of names to make replacement nametags for children who have lost them, or for new regular attendees. The names must be typed on a nametag template, copies made, cut, laminated, cut again, and then hole punched and distributed. It typically takes one to two hours to complete this task. We would love to have a volunteer or two take over this ministry! If you are interested, please contact Amber or Beth in the church office at 448-1620.
  • Vacation Bible School (VBS): Even though we still have snow around, it is time to begin planning for VBS. There many ways to be involved: donating items; teaching the children; leading the children; helping with the crafts; etc. Mark your calendars now forJune 23rd – 27th and plan on coming out to help. If you want more information about ways you can help, contact Erica Ridge (enridge@bsu.edu or 448-9419) and look for more details in the coming months.
  • The Fellowship Team: Frequently, our church has meals and times of fellowship (usually after a Family Gathering). As many of you know, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, including set up, tear down and serving food. The Fellowship Team is in charge of all of this and is currently looking for new members. If you are interested in helping out in this area, contact Pastor Tim Depue at tdepue@ksbc.net.
  • Nursery: Do you enjoy holding and playing with babies? We can always use help in the nursery! There are many opportunities available to serve in the nursery: Sunday morning for both services and the ABF hour, once a month Family Gatherings and Wednesday nights for the prayer service. Everyone who serves in the nursery must be a member of KSBC, fill out a form and provide references. If you would like to serve in this area, contact Karen Stewart (474-3105 or tkstewart.1@insightbb.com).
  • Host Ministry: God has blessed us with a facility that is both beautiful and useful. Fairly frequently groups and individuals from community request to use our building for an event or ministry. In order for them to do this, we require that a member of KSBC serve as the event Host. The Host is responsible for unlocking and locking the doors, seeing that clean-up is completed properly, and being on hand in case of emergencies or if our guests have questions. We are looking to have a pool of names of people interested in this capacity so that when these opportunities arise, we have a group to call upon to serve. If you have questions about this ministry or are interested in signing up, please contact Amber or Beth in the church office, 448-1620.
  • Overnight Hosting (Shepherd’s Group): The Shepherd’s Group is coming in April to minister to our church through singing, etc. If you are interested in hosting them overnight, please contact the church office (448-1620 or ksbc@ksbc.net).

Women’s Bible Study
“Let the Word of Christ Dwell Richly” is the theme and purpose of the women’s Bible study on the book of Colossians. This study will meet on Wednesdays in room 206 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM, beginning March 19th and running for seven weeks. Childcare is provided. In the course of studying Colossians, we will talk about how to come to the Word with a totally open heart and mind so that the Holy Spirit can plant it in our hearts. The study begins with some of the basics that make Bible study more effective in transforming our lives so that the Word can do its work in us. Sign up at the Welcome Desk and pick up your copy of the study guide so you will be ready. And pray that God will work in the hearts of the women of KSBC to refresh our spirits as we come together, to lead us into a deeper understanding and love for the Word, and to teach us what we need to know about our Lord Jesus Christ so that we can serve Him with greater passion.

SLCF Spring Retreat

Salt and Light Christian Fellowship is looking forward to our annual Spring Retreat! This year, we get to hold it a little later than usual, so we’re hoping for warm weather on
April 4th-5th. We’re grateful for Dean and Chris Zimmerman, who have opened up their property for us. We look forward to spending time together away from campus and learning from God’s Word!

Check Out the Church Calendar Online!
The church calendar can now be accessed from our website (http://www.calendarwiz.com/ksbccalendar). There is a link on the right hand column of every page that takes you to the calendar where you can see the various ministries that go on at church including times, descriptions, and contact people for the events. How does it all work? Good question! The default view is a month by month look at all the public activities. Other views are as follows:
Right over the Thursday/Friday part, you can choose to view a whole month, a week, a day, or simply a list of all the events for that month.
But maybe you just want to see what is going on for the Children’s Ministry (or another category). Simply choose the category you wish to view in the dropdown box above the Monday/Tuesday part.
On the other hand, maybe you are looking for a specific event, such as the Jubilee Run or VBS. Clicking on the “Search” button on the top bar allows you to search for events.
You can even ask the calendar to email you a reminder of certain events. Simply click on the event to see the description, and in the window that pops up, click on “Set Reminder” in the top right corner. It will ask for your email address and when you want the reminder sent.
Reserving a room, equipment or a vehicle still requires you to contact the church office. However, you are now be able to look on the calendar first to see what dates are available. After you have found a date, fill out a Building Use/Equipment Reservation Form and turn it in to the church office (Amber Magnuson’s mailbox, if the office is closed). When your request has been considered, we will contact you concerning the reservation.

KSBC Youth Announces Twin Lakes Camp Scholarship Program

The youth ministry here at KSBC strongly recommends that families make a week of camp part of their summer plans. Camp is an excellent opportunity for students to grow in their relationship with God, to learn about God’s Word, learn to interact with new people, discover who they are, and have a great time. To back up this call for attending summer church camp, a merit based (given to those who fulfill the requirements) scholarship is being instated for this summer. The church will pay $100 of the cost of one week at Twin Lakes Camp for any student (2nd-12th grade in Fall ‘08) connected with KSBC who fulfills the requirements for this scholarship. All qualifying students must
memorize the designated verses for their current grade in school. Junior campers must participate in two service projects, Middle School campers three, and High School campers must complete four service projects. In addition, High School campers must
take notes on five sermons and submit them to Jesse Magnuson for review. Requirements must be completed by June 1, 2008 in order to qualify for the scholarship. A detailed information packet and graded verse list are available in children and youth Sunday School rooms. You may contact the church office or Jesse or Amber Magnuson
(jmagnuson@ksbc.net or amagnuson@ksbc.net) for more details. Please note: Anyone applying for the scholarship must also register for camp. Completion of scholarship
requirements does not mean that a child is registered for camp! Registration forms and brochures are available at the Welcome Center in the foyer.

Why Camp?
Nathan Chambers, program director at Twin Lakes Camp, holds that there are five key reasons to send kids to Christian camp: First, concentrated exposure to the Word of God. Second, separation from the man-made environment. Third, entrance into the outdoors. Fourth, relationship with the body. And fifth, qualified leadership. This summer, Twin Lakes’ theme is “Get in the Game,” which focuses on promoting right thinking about and becoming active in the body of believers. What a fun way to learn the truth about Christ and His church!
