Short-term Missions Team Coming to KSBC This Summer
We’re used to hearing of short-term mission teams going out to Haiti, South Africa, and China, but this summer a team will be coming right here to our church. Between August 5th-12th a team of 7-15 people will be coming to reach out to the international students at Purdue. Their activities will include classes on evangelism, seminars on cultural awareness (taught by international students), teaching English to internationals, organizing/cleaning furniture, and helping distribute furniture at our annual furniture give-away for new students. We plan to keep them busy all week.
This is the first time we’re trying this, and to make it a success we need you help. Can you, your family, or your ABF provide the following meals:
August 5, after Family Gathering Sunday dinner 6pm (serve 40)
August 8, Wednesday lunch 12 noon (serve 20)
August 8, Wednesday dinner 5:30pm (serve 30)
August 10, Friday lunch 12 noon (serve 20)
August 12, after church Sunday lunch 12:30pm (serve 70)
There is a sign-up sheet for these meals at the welcome center. Your expenses are reimbursable. Our goal is to show the incoming team the many opportunities we have right here in our own country to reach out to the world through international students. Please contact Dana Gottfried, Dean Zimmerman, or Paul Briggs if you have any questions.
Put Your Furniture to Good Use!
Your spring cleaning may have turned up some furniture at your house that isn’t being used or doesn’t quite fit your décor anymore. If you have good used (definition: if you would still use it yourself) furniture, consider giving it to a new international student. In the middle of August we will be giving the furniture away to international students who will have just arrived in our country. This is a concrete way we can show these newcomers a love they may have never experienced in their own countries. New students are especially in need of kitchen tables and chairs, couches, easy chairs, and beds. Please contact the SLCF International office if you have any such furniture that you would like to give away.
Garage Saling with a Purpose
Do you like to go to garage sales? Why not go garage saling with a purpose….to make some new international friends and assist them in getting established in a new country! On Saturday morning, August 5 (from 6:45am – 10:30am), KSBC is organizing transportation for new international students from Purdue Village to go to garage sales around the Lafayette area. You would be responsible to take several students to the garage sales; a separate truck will pick up and deliver the larger items purchased. If you can assist in this way, please contact Dana Gottfried or Paul Briggs.
Bike Ride Planned for July 14
We are organizing a group of enthusiastic cyclists from KSBC to participate in the 2007 Ride Across Indiana (RAIN) bike ride on Saturday, July 14th. This is a 165 mile, single day bike ride across the state beginning on the Indiana/Illinois state line and finishing in Richmond. Several KSBCers have endured this ride before and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge as well as meeting many friendly people along the route. We are announcing this trip now so that you can begin training for this unique event. A block of hotel rooms have been reserved for the night of the 13th in Terre Haute. We plan to travel as a group to Terre Haute on the evening of July 13. Each person is responsible for their ride registration and their share of the hotel room and gas. Please contact Dan Childs or Dirk Maier if you are interested and to obtain a copy of the RAIN entry form.
Valedictorian Speech by Juli Hoon
On May 26th, valedictorian Juli Hoon addressed her senior class at Faith Christian School during the graduation ceremony. The content of her speech is a reflection of the content of her heart, and so we share it with you that you may thank God for His work in the lives of KSBC young people.
I would like to thank all of the teachers, administration, family, and friends that have helped me and each of my classmates get to this point. A special thank you goes to our senior class sponsors, Mr. B and Miss Huston for giving away their Wednesday mornings and for helping us have a great Senior year. Thank you to God for putting each of those people in my life and blessing me with strong friendships. To my family: Mom and Dad, thank you for your constant love and support. Vince, thanks for setting the bar so high and always making me laugh. Matt, I love you, and Deborah you are the best sister any girl could ask for.
To the class of 2007…after four years of high school, there will be no more homerooms or school lunches. However, homework and projects will most likely still be a part of our lives for at least another four years. I feel privileged to have been part of an amazing class where everyone not only gets along, but enjoys each other’s company, where laughter is always found, and most importantly, where God is so involved. It has been a joy for me to see God’s work not only in my own life, but also in the lives of my classmates. When our class experienced difficult times, it only brought us closer to each other and to God. We should all feel privileged to have been able to attend this school.
Throughout the years, our class has witnessed multiple state championships in soccer, volleyball, and basketball, and has enjoyed the vocal and musical abilities of other classmates. Our competitive spirit has also shown through in such events as Spirit Week, which we only lost once. One thing that was never our forte was making class t-shirts… if you question that, just look at last year’s.
I know there are many more accomplishments to come because I know God has great plans in store for each of us. As we continue in the next phase of our lives, I hope we take the memories and lessons we have learned with us. I hope we remember the commitments we made together on Senior Trip to be bold, courageous Christians, and I hope we all make the most of the time God has given us by living our lives to the fullest for Him.
14th Annual Jubilee Run
Our 14th annual Jubilee Run is just around the corner! On July 21st, nearly a hundred athletes from the area will run a course that will begin at KSBC and work its way through Columbian Park. We use this race both to present the gospel to local runners and to raise money in support of Bethesda Outreach in South Africa. Keep an eye out for sign-up sheets in the coming weeks–we will need a lot of volunteer help to set up and run the race! If you’re interested in running or know some friends who are runners, you can find flyers for the race at the Welcome Center in the foyer.
