We continue the third week of our study of the Psalms centered around Psalm 22.
Will the Lord reject forever and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love ceased forever? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger withheld his compassion? These are the honest questions of the psalmist (77:7-9) as he wrestles with his thoughts at a time in his life when God seems far away. Psalm 13:2 in the NIV asks the question: “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts?” There are a number of terms grouped in these psalms that teach us the mental and spiritual turmoil that people of faith must go through in times of suffering . . . it is in fact wrestling with our own thoughts.
